After High Wind: What to Record Before Garage Door Service

After high wind has passed and the area is safe to enter, a garage door may look different without revealing the full extent of damage. Keep the opening out of use if sections, tracks or supports appear displaced.

Record the scene without operating the door

Photograph the whole opening and visible damage from outside the travel area. Note whether the door was found open, closed or partly displaced. Do not cycle it to demonstrate the problem or approach loose material.

Keep paperwork with the observations

Locate available labels, installation records and product documents from existing files. These can help identify the assembly. Missing records should be reported as missing, not replaced with a guess based on the neighborhood or visible reinforcement.

Separate repair assessment from a claim decision

Ask the service professional to describe the observed damage and proposed work. Questions about coverage, payment or claim handling belong with the relevant provider; a repair estimate does not by itself establish insurance coverage.

Your questions

Can I push a displaced door closed for security?

Do not force or improvise support for a damaged assembly. Describe the opening’s condition and ask about safe professional securing options.

Does no visible dent prove the door is undamaged?

No. Surface appearance alone does not establish the condition of supporting hardware or the complete assembly.
