Replacing a One-Piece Garage Door with a Sectional Door

A single rigid panel that pivots out follows a different path from a sectional door. Replacing it is a chance to review how the opening is used, but a sectional system should not be ordered as though only the visible panel changes.

Identify the existing arrangement without operating a suspect door

Take normal floor-level photos of the closed door and accessible identification labels. Tell the estimator whether the door projects toward parked vehicles or stored items during normal use. Do not disconnect, lift or test an unstable door to gather dimensions.

Measure the replacement system’s needs

Have the installer assess space above, beside and behind the opening, plus mounting conditions for the new tracks and operator. Discuss any ceiling storage or lights that could conflict. The existing pivot hardware does not establish that a sectional arrangement will fit.

Specify the operator and handover together

DASMA’s one-piece guidance makes clear that door type matters when considering operation and controls. Do not assume an existing motor or unattended-closing feature is suitable for every arrangement. Ask the installer to document the compatible system and demonstrate its safe use after completion.

Your questions

Can the new sectional door reuse all the old hardware?

Do not assume so. It has a different travel and support arrangement. The quote should identify the required tracks, counterbalance and mounting work.

Should I pull the release to show the estimator how the old door moves?

Do not operate or release a suspect door for a demonstration. Describe its normal behavior and let the professional determine a safe assessment.
