Record Garage Door Labels Before Repainting

A label that becomes unreadable under paint can make a later parts search harder. Before arranging a garage door repaint, record accessible product identification and ask which markings should remain visible.

Identify door and opener separately

The door sections and motor may come from different manufacturers. Keep a clear photograph of each accessible label with the installation paperwork. Do not climb onto the door, remove covers or work near loaded hardware to find a number.

Give the painter the correct product instructions

Finish preparation and permitted coating choices depend on the door material and factory finish. A general exterior-house paint specification may not suit the door. Confirm requirements before masking, sanding or coating begins.

Retain more than the model name

Keep available serial or product numbers, purchase information and the scope of the repaint. Those records help explain which surface treatment was applied later. They do not establish that an unknown door meets a particular performance requirement.

Your questions

Can a painted-over label be replaced from a photograph?

Ask the manufacturer what identification or replacement-label process is available. Do not create an unofficial performance label yourself.

Does the opener brand tell me who made the door?

No. Treat the motor and door as separately identified products when seeking manuals or replacement parts.
