Distinguish factory finish from field repainting
Clopay discusses specialized coatings and heat considerations for dark finishes. A factory-finished dark product and a white door repainted with ordinary exterior paint are not automatically equivalent choices.
Give the product details to the painter
Identify the door model, current finish and any coating already applied. Ask for the permitted preparation, primer and paint system. Avoid covering labels, glazing details or moving joints while treating the exterior surface.
Review the decision before the work
If the desired color is outside the existing product’s guidance, compare an appropriate alternative finish or replacement option. Do not respond to later binding by increasing opener force; describe the change and have the assembly assessed.
Your questions
Can every steel garage door be painted black?
No universal answer applies. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the identified product and finish system.
Does a dark-color sample prove the same paint suits my old door?
No. A sample shows appearance, not compatibility with the existing construction and coating.
